Background:
One of Compassion’s core processes is letter-writing, in which a sponsor and their sponsored child can write letters to each other. Over the years, several challenges have developed from the letter-writing process including burdensome administrative tasks for staff, limiting authentic expression by children, and dissatisfaction from sponsors due to formulaic letters.
Communicate for Outcomes was a project in collaboration with marketing and program(field staff) that aimed to solve these paint points as well as provide new activities for children in the Compassion program that contributed to their development and could also be turned into a communication piece to their sponsor.
My role:
As the design lead for this project, I participated in 2 product design sprints in Kenya, and led the prototyping during the sprints. I also art directed further design refinements for the prototype throughout further usability design and testing phases.
Sprint 1
From the first sprint, our team interviewed focus groups and observed a classroom completing a letter-writing assignment. We took detailed notes and observations, and leaned in with the children and tutors to discover where their pain-points were in the letter-writing process.
Our research set us up for our sprint week, and from it we developed a digital vision board tool in which youth could visualize their future with inspiration pictures and motivational quotes and stickers.

Sprint 2
Our second sprint focused on refining the Vision Boards activity by testing physical vision boards with magazines and other arts and crafts materials. Testing the physical activity informed our refinements of our digital vision boarding tool, and also revealed profound insights from the youth.
We learned through the physical test, that the digital app needed to have a full interactive learning module to introduce the youth to the concept of vision boards better. They needed video guidance, similar to a listening to their tutor in the classroom. We redesigned the prototype, and were also able to integrate a custom developed canvas for the actual vision board creation on the web.
The visual identity for the digital app was designed by Taylor Streeter under my art direction.
